Learn to speak Chinese out loud

Chinese is spoken by more first-language speakers than any other language. Speaking early helps you with the tones, which reading cannot teach.

Speaking Chinese

Why speak Chinese from day one

Chinese is tonal: the same syllable can mean different things depending on pitch. You cannot learn that silently. Hear each sentence, say it aloud, and check which words the recogniser heard.

Chinese is written in Chinese characters. You hear and say each sentence while you learn to read it, so the writing system is never a wall in front of speaking.

A sentence to start with

Chinese questions, answered

Can I learn Chinese for free with 4ToSpeak?

Yes. The free plan needs no card and has no time limit. You get 25 daily energy, about 3 to 4 full lessons a day, and the whole module store is open to you (some modules cost coins you earn by practising).

How does 4ToSpeak teach Chinese speaking?

Every Chinese sentence goes through four steps: you order it, translate it, listen and type it, then say it out loud. The last step is the point. You hear how close you were, word by word, instead of tapping an answer.

Do I need a microphone to practise Chinese?

Yes, for the speaking step. Your browser asks permission the first time, and it works on a phone, a tablet or a computer. The other three steps work without one.

Do I need to know any Chinese already?

No. Lessons start from short everyday Chinese sentences and build up, so you can begin from nothing.

Is Chinese hard to learn for English speakers?

It takes more hours than most European languages. Tones and characters are the main hurdles. Spoken grammar is simpler than people expect, with no verb conjugation or plurals to learn.
